What Is a Mimosa?

Traditionally, a mimosa is a delicious cocktail made from sparkling wine and orange juice. It’s often served in a champagne flute or narrow wine glass.

The mimosa cocktail is named after the yellow flower that blooms on the Mimosa tree, which is also vibrant and bright orange — just like a gorgeous sunrise.

Originally, they were called Champagne Oranges in the French wine country. When the British Royals brought this delightful cocktail to England, it became known as a mimosa. It soon became popular in American bars and is now a staple morning drink along with the well-known Bloody Mary.

My Elderberry Mimosas take seconds to whip up and stand out with a splash of elderberry syrup. They’re fizzy, crisp and the perfect way to start your morning.

Three Simple Ingredients for The Elderberry Mimosa

These Elderberry Mimosas couldn’t be simpler to make! They only require three basic ingredients: chilled sparkling wine, orange juice and elderberry syrup. That’s it!

You don’t even need ice! In fact, skip the ice for the best results. Using it dilutes those beautiful bubbles!

Never made a mimosa before? Don’t even worry about it! You’ll soon be an expert.

Maybe you’ve made mimosas and you’re intrigued by this new recipe with immune-boosting elderberry. Either way, keep reading. You’re going to love this recipe and might even learn a few new tips!

1. CHILLED SPARKLING WINE

Mimosas are typically served in champagne flutes but are made with dry, sparkling wine, not champagne.

Instead, look for a good bottle of Cava or Prosecco. Cava is from Spain, and Prosecco is from Italy. They’re both delicious and super affordable — a bottle will cost you between $12 and $17. Try to avoid buying cheap sparkling wine because you will taste the difference.

Be sure to use a dry, not sweet, wine. You can get a headache if you combine the natural sugar from the orange juice with even more sweetness.

2. CHILLED ORANGE JUICE

Orange juice is the key to this sunshine-colored cocktail. It’s packed with vital nutrients such as potassium, calcium, folate, magnesium and vitamins C & D.

It’s also remarkably high in antioxidants and decreases inflammation.

Fresh orange juice is the way to go with this recipe! Nothing can beat its flavor and crispness. If fresh-squeezed isn’t available, that’s ok. Be sure to buy high-quality orange juice from the store. None of that “from concentrate” stuff — trust me! You’ll also want to make sure it’s pulp-free.

Don’t get me wrong, I love pulp in my OJ. But pulp makes a mess when mixed with bubbly and takes away from the smoothness of this drink.

If you decide to juice your oranges (you crazy person, you), just be sure to do it ahead of time. You’ll need to chill the juice before concocting this delicious drink. Remember to strain out the pulp before combining the ingredients.

Any type of orange, from clementines to naval oranges, will deliver delicious juices for a mimosa. The choice is yours!

3. ELDERBERRY SYRUP

Taking elderberry syrup daily is one of the best ways to support your overall immune health. My kids and I won’t skip it for anything, especially this time of the year. Elderberries are also known for shortening the duration and symptoms of colds and flu and are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamin C and fiber.

Elderberries also tame inflammation, lessen the effects of stress and protect your heart.

We love coming up with different ways to get your daily dose, and that’s precisely how the Elderberry Mimosa came to be! I mean, why not kick this classic cocktail up a notch?

Ratio of The Elderberry Mimosa Ingredients

Most recipes call for a 50/50 ratio of sparkling wine to orange juice. But I suggest ⅓ juice to ⅔ (or 1 part to 2 parts) sparkling wine. It seems to be the perfect balance between sweet and refreshing.

It’s really all about finding what you prefer! You may add more orange juice for a sweeter drink or more alcohol if you prefer a tart taste. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this mimosa!

Tips for the Best Mimosa Out There

Here are a few simple tips to make the best mimosa ever!

  • Always have your ingredients chilled. Warm doesn’t equal refreshing.
  • Serve in tall, narrow glasses, such as flutes or wine glasses. It helps retain the bubbles.
  • Chill your glasses to help keep everything icy cold and refreshingly delicious.
  • Pour in sparkling wine first, not the orange juice. This helps you avoid an overflow of bubbles, waste of ingredients and a big mess.
  • Hold your glass at a slight tilt to help preserve the carbonation.
  • Never stir the ingredients. The pouring and bubbles alone will mix the drink perfectly.
  • Say no to ice. If your ingredients are chilled, ice isn’t necessary. Plus, it can decrease the bubbly action and dilute the sweetness. No thanks!
  • Skip the pulp. Chunky mimosa? No way. For a smooth cocktail, choose pulp-free OJ.
  • Try a variety of garnishes, like fresh strawberries, blueberries, oranges and even mint.

Have I mentioned how gorgeous this drink is? Whoever receives this delicious orange elderberry concoction will be in absolute heaven, I promise!

Non-alcoholic Mimosas

Wondering how to make these non-alcoholic? Here are some tasty substitutes for sparkling wine:

  • Sparkling soda
  • Sparkling water (La Croix)
  • Sparkling grape juice
  • Ginger ale

The options are endless!
