They’re perfect for any occasion from Mother’s Day to birthdays, and even a lazy Saturday morning.
What is a Mimosa?
Traditionally, a mimosa is a delicious cocktail made from sparkling wine and orange juice. It’s often served in a champagne flute or narrow wine glass.
The mimosa cocktail is named after the yellow flower that blooms on the Mimosa tree, which is also a vibrant and bright orange. Just like a gorgeous sunrise.
Originally, they were called Champagne Oranges in the French wine country. When the British Royals brought this delightful cocktail to England, it became known as a mimosa. Pretty soon, it was popular in American bars and is now a staple morning drink along with the well-known Bloody Mary.
Mimosas are super simple to make. They’re fizzy, crisp, and the perfect way to start your morning.
Three Simple Ingredients
These Elderberry Mimosas couldn’t be simpler to make! They only require 3 basic ingredients: chilled sparkling wine, orange juice, and organic elderberry syrup. That’s it!
You don’t even need ice! Actually, for the best results, you should skip the ice. Using it dilutes those beautiful bubbles!
Never made a mimosa before? Don’t even worry about it! You’ll soon be an expert.
Maybe you have made mimosas, and you’re intrigued by this new recipe with immune-boosting elderberry. Either way, keep reading. You’re going to love this recipe and might even learn a few new tips!
Chilled Sparkling Wine
Mimosas are typically served in champagne flutes, but they’re made with dry, sparkling wine, not champagne.
Instead, look for a good bottle of Cava or Prosecco. Cava’s from Spain and Prosecco’s from Italy. They’re both delicious and super affordable — a bottle will cost you between $12-$17. Try to avoid buying cheap sparkling wine, because you will taste the difference.
Be sure to use a dry, not sweet, wine. Combining the natural sugar from the orange juice with even more sweetness could give you a headache.
Chilled Orange Juice
Orange juice is the key to this sunshine-colored cocktail. Packed with vital nutrients such as potassium, calcium, folate, magnesium, vitamin C & D, it’s a great way to start your day.
It’s also crazy high in antioxidants and decreases inflammation.
Fresh orange juice is the way to go with this recipe! Nothing can beat its flavor and crispness. If fresh-squeezed isn’t available, that’s ok. Just be sure to buy high-quality orange juice from the store. None of that “from concentrate” stuff — yuck! And make sure it’s pulp-free.
Don’t get me wrong, I love pulp in my OJ. But it makes a mess when mixing with bubbly and takes away from the smoothness of this drink.
If you decide to go even further and juice your oranges (you crazy person, you), just be sure to do it ahead of time. You’ll need to chill the juice before concocting this delicious drink. And remember to strain out the pulp.
Any type of orange will deliver delicious juices for a mimosa, from clementines to naval oranges. The choice is yours!
Elderberry Syrup
Taking elderberry syrup every day is one of the best ways to support overall immune health. My kids and I won’t skip it for anything, especially this time of the year. Elderberries are also known for their ability to shorten the duration and symptoms of colds and flu and are an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamin c, and fiber.
Elderberries also tame inflammation, lessen the effects of stress, and protect your heart.
We love thinking up different ways to get your daily dose in, and that’s exactly how the Elderberry Mimosa came to be! I mean, why not kick this classic cocktail up a notch?
Let’s Talk Ratio
Most recipes out there call for a 50/50 ratio of sparkling wine to orange juice. But I actually suggest ⅓ juice to ⅔ (or 1 part to 2 parts) sparkling wine. It seems to be the perfect balance between sweet and refreshing.
It’s really all about finding what you prefer! You may decide to add more orange juice for a sweeter drink, or more alcohol if you think tart is tastier. Either way, you can’t go wrong with this mimosa!
How to Make Elderberry Mimosas
Alright, enough talking. It’s mimosa-making time — time to enjoy those fresh flavors I keep raving about!
Make sure your glasses and three simple ingredients — sparkling wine, orange juice, and organic elderberry syrup are chilled.
1. Hold your flute or wine glass at a slight tilt and fill ⅔ with sparkling wine.
2. Fill the rest of the glass with orange juice, but leave a little room for the next step.
3. Add a splash (about 1 tbsp) of elderberry syrup.
4. Garnish with fresh oranges or raspberries.
5. Sip away!
Tips for the Best Mimosa Out There
- Always have your ingredients chilled. Warm doesn’t equal refreshing.
- Serve in tall narrow glasses, such as flutes or wine glasses. It helps retain the bubbles.
- Chill your glasses to help keep everything icy cold and refreshingly delicious.
- Pour in sparkling wine first, not the orange juice. This helps you avoid an overflow of bubbles, wasting ingredients, and a big mess.
- Hold your glass at a slight tilt to help preserve the carbonation.
- Never stir the ingredients. The pouring and bubbles alone will mix the drink perfectly.
- Say no to ice. If your ingredients are chilled, ice isn’t necessary. Plus, it can decrease the bubbly action and dilute the sweetness. No thanks!
- Skip the pulp. Chunky mimosa? Yuck. For a smooth cocktail, choose pulp-free OJ.
- Try a variety of garnishes, like fresh strawberries, blueberries, oranges, and even mint.
Non-alcoholic Mimosas
Can you make these non-alcoholic? Absolutely!
Sparkling soda, sparkling water (La Croix), sparkling grape juice, or even ginger ale can be substituted for sparkling wine.
The options are endless!
