Nothing compares to chocolatey, rich, velvety fudge melting in your mouth. It’s an old-fashioned favorite for anyone who enjoys indulging a little. And nothing feels more nostalgic than good ole’ swirled fudge.
This fudge recipe is easy, fast to make, and satisfies even the strongest chocolate craving. It also works great at a cookie swap if you want to change things up a bit! I mean, who doesn’t love fudge more than cookies?
If someone prefers cookies, it’s only because they haven’t tasted this fudge.
What is Fudge?
Fudge is a creamy candy usually made with three staple ingredients — milk, sugar, and butter. It’s cooked together and beaten to a soft and smooth texture.
Aside from these basic ingredients, it’s usually flavored with chocolate, peanut butter, marshmallow, or chopped nuts.
Why Add an Elderberry Swirl?
The question should be, why not add an elderberry swirl?
My organic elderberry syrup is loaded with superfoods, antioxidants, and vitamins. It’s made with organic ingredients that help my family stay healthy all year round.
It’s no wonder I’m always looking for new ways to use elderberry syrup in the kitchen, and this fudge is no exception!
It’s an easy way to add a light hint of flavor while also giving this indulgent treat a bit of a health kick to it. I promise you’re going to love these.
Not to mention the contrast of rich chocolate with elderberry purple is gorgeous! They’re perfect to give as a gift or to serve at a party.
When it comes to cooking fudge, there are really only two ways to go about it.
- The old-fashioned way using a candy thermometer and doing a whole lot of stirring
- The shortcut version, which calls for sweetened condensed milk, is just as tasty and oh so ridiculously easy
Since life is usually crazy busy, I tend to go with number 2.
Sometimes – we just need to embrace shortcuts for the life-simplifying gifts they are. So count me in!
That’s what we’re doing with this Chocolate Elderberry Swirled Fudge. Quick, easy, and downright delicious.
- Organic full fat sweetened condensed milk (divided evenly)
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- White chocolate chips
- Organic elderberry syrup
- Unsalted butter (divided evenly)
- Line an 8-inch-square baking pan with parchment paper and hang excess over the sides. The extra paper will act as handles and allow you to easily remove the entire block of fudge once it has set.
- Fill a saucepan with a little bit of water (about ¼ full) and bring to a boil on high heat. Then reduce to a simmer.
- In a separate heatproof bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, semi-sweet chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Place the heatproof bowl on top of the simmering saucepan to make a double broiler. Remember to not let the bottom of the bowl touch the water. It should be just above it. Stir frequently until all ingredients are melted and smooth.
- Remove from heat (the mixture will be thick) and spread evenly into your parchment-lined pan.
- In a separate heatproof bowl, combine sweetened condensed milk, white chocolate chips and unsalted butter. Repeat the double broiler melting process. Once melted, gently stir in organic elderberry syrup.
- Pour over the chocolate mixture already in the pan. Then, using a spoon, gently splatter small droplets of the remaining elderberry syrup over the fudge. You can do this when the end of a butter knife.
- With a knife or toothpick, swirl through for a marbled effect. Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
And there you have it!
Looks super fancy, but no one will guess it was this easy to make.
Cut into squares to reveal those gorgeous swirls and taste the treat you’ve been drooling over.
Does Fudge Need Refrigeration?
Nope, it sure doesn’t. This fudge recipe will keep at room temperature. It’s good for up to two weeks on the counter.
If you prefer your fudge cold, you can refrigerate it for up to three weeks.
Just be sure to store in an airtight container.
Can You Freeze Fudge?
You sure can! I always suggest freezing the entire block of fudge and then slicing it into smaller squares after it’s been thawed. This ensures that it stays fresher in the freezer.
Be sure to wrap the fudge in plastic wrap and then into a freezer bag. It will stay good for up to 4 months.
To thaw, just place the block of fudge in the fridge for about 10 hours, then set it out on your counter to bring it to room temperature before slicing. Usually about an hour.
When you know how addicting this fudge is, it’s silly to think about leftovers. But if you made too much to eat, there’s a delicious way to use it up!
Simply stir in a piece of fudge into some hot milk and enjoy the best cup of hot chocolate you’ll ever have, I’m not kidding!
You can also melt a piece and use it as a drizzle over top ice cream, baked goods, and even pancakes. Yum!
